Most actors hate the idea of having to have a “type.” No one wants to be cast because they are someone else; you want to be cast because you’re YOU! But it’s important to understand that casting directors, agents, and managers all need to know what you’re selling so they can buy it. If an industry professional can make a comparison to you, that gives them a good idea of how to buy or sell your services. Which means if there’s one thing you need to know to make a living as an actor, it’s knowing your type! So how do you figure out your type? Start by making a list of all the A-list celebrities that friends or family have said you remind them of. Whether that’s because of your voice, appearance, or essence, add every celebrity name you can think of to your list. No matter how much you hate the comparisons, remember that in the end this is a GOOD thing. Then, take a look at your list and figure out your unique type. For example, let’s say you look like Mary Louise Parker but your vibe is Chelsea Handler. That’s your type: a Mary Louise Parker look and a Chelsea Handler vibe! Not Mary Louise Parker, not Chelsea Handler, but a Mary Louise Parker / Chelsea Handler hybrid. AKA, YOU! Now that you’ve got your type down, be the best you can be at that type and you will start booking those particular roles. This is a wonderful springboard toward booking work, getting credits, and making money! Getting pigeonholed isn’t so bad when you’re getting the chance to act and get paid for it!
